Responsibility

Image
Connection Responsibility In these goruptime activities the children learned that we all have a responsibility in all the communities we are part of and that each community has different rules and needs.  Using a Venn Diagram we  compared the home and school community, We listed the various things we do such as tidying up and keeping everyone and our space a safe space to be in.  We realized that there many of our responsibilities in the home and school are the same adn different at the same time.  Mila said that it's easy for them to remember to help because they do it all the time.  All communities are connected so it's important to always follow through our responsibilities and care for one another.

What communities are you part of?

"Why are there candies in a gas station?" The children worked on a web to show which communities they are part of.  We discovered that we all belong in many different communities like a sports group, church group, music and art classes. We talked about the people who are also part of these communities like family members, teachers, coaches and friends and how each one has a shared goal and responsibility that they contribute in the group.  This shows how each one of us is an important member of a community. They were very intrigued by the how the gas station works and also about the very friendly barber we saw on our community walk. They voted these community helpers as their project in this unit. We first made a list of questions for the gas station workers. Paxton: Where does the gas come? Francine: Why are there candies in the gas station? To find out more we watched a Youtube video showing how underground fuel tanks are filled up at a Chevron gas station.  ...

Mila was especially observant throughout the day telling me about children she noticed taking turns, sharing and working on projects together.

In this unit the children will explore the various roles we have in our community.  We started off by going on a walk up on Dunbar street to observe the neighbourhood and identify some community helpers the children might know. As we approached Dunbar some of them said " we can hear community helpers!".  They were referring to the construction workers and we were lucky to have the site manager around to tell us about what he does and some safety reminders when around a construction site. The Barber shop on 41st Ave was exceptionally friendly and invited us inside his shop.  We even had our group picture taken! We have been there a couple years ago and one of the Dads was kind enough to volunteer as a customer and had a shave.  The children enjoyed watching this and it was nice to have parents be part of the grou ptime action. I think we will do this again. Any volunteers?? "We hear construction workers!" VSB Maintainance person fixing drains communi...

New Unit: The Work People perform helps build community

Image
working together is taking turns working together by sharing working together by helping In this formative assessment I wanted to find out what children know about how people work together in a community.   I gave them a task of completing a puzzle in pairs and once they were done they had to assess themselves and explain how they worked together. Paxton: Mila and I took turns putting the pieces Matthew: We shared this puzzle Francine: We helped each other.  Question: Why do you think people work together?  Mila: Well, there are people working at a house beside my house. If there's only one person working then he will have to go up and down, up and down many times.  Kathryn: So you mean working together makes it a lot easier.  Mila: Yah, and working together makes people happy. Kathryn: Oh so working together is fun, too! In our discussion we used this analogy of the house and workers to show that everyone has a impor...
