Assessment: How does it make you feel when....

I feel sad when my friends help me; I don't need their help.

Assessment is our way of finding out what the children learned/remembered or if they have any other comments or questions about our past activities. This is an individual assessment where the children were asked to complete each statement by telling me how they felt about specific situations. The two main ideas are: friends HELPING each other, and saying "HELLO".

As we talked about different types of feelings Orin suggested that friends are not allowed to be angry and sad. I asked why he thinks so but he wasn't sure. So I asked the other children what they think and Lysander said that sometimes he gets angry. Using our feelings board on the science table they each shared a time when a friend made them feel sad, angry, afraid or silly. This is to show that friendly relationships can involve many different emotions.

    What a fantastic unit to focus on during this month with all the new faces! Alexis has been talking more lately about her feelings (sad, happy) so this aspect of the unit is very timely, thanks.

     In this part of the inquiry the children were drawn to a story about a Boy and  a stray puppy who developed friendship as they go through the feelings of sadness, loneliness and in search of a friend. The story lines were catchy and simple enough that children repeatedly said the lines over and over again in their play. Yoga story: Lion and the Mouse

 Before we began our Yoga story of the day the children greeted the beautiful Spring sunshine with their gentle, yet energized breath. I find Sun Salutation poses are the best to revitalize and refresh the mind and body. These poses are dynamic yet focused so provide children the space to be actively engaged and be in their own space while doing the poses. Unit of Inquiry: Friendship

    September is a wonderful time to be experiencing new and exciting things.  As we continue to learn the new ropes and routine in school we also make new connections and build new friendships along the way.  This current Unit of Inquiry will explore Friendships.  The aim of this unit is to help children develop an understanding of: How do we develop friendly relationships, how to foster friendly relationships and the giving and receiving of friendship.
